About Us

People ask us how we got started, so here’s the short version.

Northwind began in 2016 when two of us went in together on a second-hand 5 kg roaster and set it up in the back of a friend’s shop. Neither of us had a plan much beyond wanting to drink better coffee than we could find nearby. For the first year we sold bags to whoever would take them and roasted at night after our other jobs.

Things grew slowly. We moved into our own space in Karakoy in 2019, put a small cafe at the front, and kept the roaster where customers could see it. Today there are eight of us. We still roast in small batches, a few days a week, and we still sell most of it before it has a chance to sit around.

We travel to origin when we can and we buy through importers we trust the rest of the time. That’s really the whole story.
